Alliance is the main service point for BNSF coal trains going south out of the powder river. The trains come in to the alliance yard the power is taken off and serviced and the cars are inspected and air tested. The yard sometimes get plugged with trains forcing trains to wait outside of the yard. These trains are going to power plants all over the country.

Near Alliance, Nebraska, we saw several 100+ car coal trains, fully loaded, stopped one after another on the lines into Alliance from the north-west and south-west, plus three or four empty trains heading the other way. (We also saw one empty train heading into Alliance from the south-west which must have switched from track to track to zigzag round the other trains.) Our research suggests the coal is mined in Wyoming and Montana and transported to power plants in the mid-west, but that still doesn't explain why so many trains were stalled and seemingly going every which way. Can anyone explain where the coal is going, why Alliance is a hub, and why there were so many trains waiting on the tracks?
